So this is my garden in June! So Valley goers just ignore this post because this probably won't impress you, but I have to say this is the best garden I have ever had. Gardening in Central Oregon, for me anyways, has been challenging at best. What with late frosts in the Spring, early frosts in the Fall, and the junkiest soil I have ever seen, my gardens usually don't look this good until September and then they don't look even quite this good. But necessity breeds invention, so this year I was determined to have a better garden. For one, I planted in late April/early May, well before the last frost, which is something I never do. So I covered it religiously at night along with planting mostly cold-tolerant stuff. The other thing I did this year which I never do is manured. Thanks to my gardening buddy Jason for your manure...ha. And on top of that I put compost. Then I planted successively every few weeks to hopefully get more of a continuous crop, which I am usually too lazy to do. We have had a pretty wet spring too, so I'm sure that has helped. The other thing I did this year with my tomatoes, of course trying to buy the tallest one I could find (3 feet tall) is planting them in pots so I could bring them inside if I needed to. I have never had much luck with tomatoes here because it usually frosts way too early, but I have yet to see how this will turn out. I do have lots of green tomatoes right now so we will see....

Twinkle Toes has been sick all weekend. We went to a Hullabaloo Friday night and she got sick there and ran fever of 103 all night and Saturday too. She had all the typical flu symptoms so we did call the doctor and after speaking with them we're pretty sure she doesn't have the swine flu...thank goodness! They said if she had a fever of more than a 105 for several days then maybe worry. But thankfully it's Sunday and she is feeling much much better today and no fever. We just hope the rest of us don't get it! Mackenzie is reading a ton now, she's probably reading on a first-grade level but I'm not exactly sure. We have these Think-it-Through Sets of problems that she just loves so the other day she came to me wanting to do the one on Math. It was like subtraction problems, 8-5=? and so forth. So I taught her to count them out on her fingers and then take them away, so now she can do subtraction. She amazes me with what she can do.

Sweet Boy is going through the Naughty Terrible 3's. I'm looking forward to Age 4 with him. I'm having to practice alot of patience with him right now. His punishment is we put him up on the dresser and he has to sit there when he is being naughty. He hates it. It's working I guess.

Today has been a great Sunday. It's always a nice holy day of rest and today was especially so. I got two naps for one, so I am feeling like I can conquer the world. We had a really nice Family Home Evening with the kids, read our scriptures, then had a good family council with the hubby. I sat in the sun for a bit. I'm ready to conquer a new week and get ready for the Morrison Reunion this weekend.

Ladybugs
Some Camping Quotes from Twinkle Toes:
"That tent is WAY too small for big kids" - talking about a couple who was our "neighbor" and they had a very tiny tent.
"Mom, I know how to keep the bears out of our garbage! We can draw a scary face on the bag and that will keep them away." - ever my little problem solver.

What a Dad!
So Grace's echocardiogram results came back and I was a little disappointed that we didn't get the perfect news that we have been getting. Her echo was normal except for she has "hyperdynamic left ventricular systolic function" which is most certainly a result of her high blood pressures that she had. I'm not certain though the prognosis or what this means for Grace or how bad of a diagnosis this is. All they said was it wasn't "urgent" and that's all I really know right now. I guess I'm hoping right now that maybe this is something that will resolve with time and go away.

A Long Day
Well Grace and I made it there and back. We didn't end up getting a room at Ronald McDonald West so we had to go across the river to RMH East, which was a little bit of an inconvenience but not as bad as I thought. Nonetheless, it was a nice place to lay my head down for the night, which is pretty much what I did, I think I laid my head down...RMH East is a mansion, btw, compared to the older West house. Of course, Grace slept like a log and I of course did not since I was up trying to pump her up before her fluid cutoffs at 2 and then 4 a.m. Somehow though the clock in our room was all messed up and so when I got to OHSU in the morning thinking it was 7 a.m. I realized it was actually 6 a.m., and then it made sense why I felt like such crap. Instead of waking up at 5 I had woken up at 4 and instead of cutting her off from nursing at 2 I cut her off at 1 a.m. instead. oops. My internal bio clock must not have been working for me. So we were early. I killed time by eating breakfast in the cafeteria and amazingly Grace just sat and watched me patiently even though she had to be starving herself. When we got to Peds Sedation she played and laughed and sucked on all the chairs. No crying. She gave the docs her bashful grin and won both he and the nurse over. After blowing a couple of veins they managed to get the third IV in. I was relieved. The docs comments about her veins were "someone has been here before." Just about all her veins have been used and it's so hard now that we CAN'T use her legs, our options are really limited. I'm always thinking what if they can't find one and we can't get the test done. Oh well, I guess we would get to go home without it. I really liked the doc this time around. I think they knew they messed up last time so they took special precautions to get it right this time. I was convinced they got the message so I didn't tape a note to her legs, but I did bring a note and it was in my purse. I did, however, put pants and socks on her so those areas wouldn't be accessible just in case. Things were much better. She came out of anesthesia quickly and although she was still grouchy for quite a while it was no where near what it was like last time.
So that took awhile and then as soon as we got through that we had to go to have her echo done. I guess they didn't coordinate well and so she could have used sedation for that too. They barely got their images and I had to do a dance to get her to sit still for that. The technician was like "she's crazy." And I'm thinking no she's not, she's just sick of being strapped down and poked. I had her in this lovely pretty pink dress just for Amira and of course she pooped all over it during her echo. The technician was like "I'm out of here" and he left the room while I cleaned up the mess. Then we met with her nephrologist. She hugged and kissed on her. Her creatinine levels are good. She is still on the BP meds though because although her BP's are normal now, they are still at the upper end of normal, so we have to be on those a little while longer. More bloodwork. More poking. More crying. The phlebotomist though was the fastest I have ever seen. He just shot in there and had blood before I could even hold my breath. Thank heavens because I was tired of holding her down by this point. Then, we met with her oncologist. Last appt of the day, I was about ready to crawl on the exam table myself and take a little nappy noo noo.
Well, her MRI came back no mass. Everything looks good. Her doc says she is not out of the woods yet, but everything is looking really good and he doesn't think the tumor is going to come back. I am relieved. I told myself if we got through the first scan all would be good. Then it was the second scan. Now I'm thinking if it isn't back by 9 mos postop then I can rest assured. We'll see. Things are looking good for Grace. She is a fighter for sure. I learned she is a bit loopy and goofy like myself though.
We hope Arianne made it back from SD. Yes, we are still keeping tabs on you. One thing I've learned about nurses and doctors is that doctors make all the decisions but nurses do all the work. I'm convinced I could have been a doctor now. I didn't realize they just walk around with pads of paper in their hands and make decisions (ha). It's called "rounds"....I can totally do that! It's the needles and blood that I can't deal with. No, after seeing all that went on up at the NICU I have a new appreciation for the medical field. We had such great care there. The nurses and doctors were excellent. When you need help, you should hope that the nurses are the ones on top of it though because they do all the detailed work and ours were excellent. One of my favorite doctors was Albert. One day when we were going through all the thick of it and I was particularly depressed at this time, I walked through the doors of the NICU and Albert with his smiling face looked so happy to see us. He said, "It's a big day for Gracie!" I remember being so happy he said that. It ended up not being such a big day for Gracie, but I was glad thinking it might be anyways.
Well, OHSU has sort of a weird "home sweet home" feeling because we spent so much time there so it was nice to visit but I'm glad to be home. We're worn out. Next time, I might have to not be so adventurous and schedule so much in one day. So the picture of Grace is right before we got into the car after our long day. She looks tired, eh? Thank goodness we're done for another 3 months or so.

Heading to Portland
Grace and I are headed to Portland tomorrow for her 2nd postop MRI scheduled for Monday a.m. We're meeting with her nephrologist, oncologist, and she has an echo too to check her heart. Wish us luck! This time around there will be notes taped to her legs that explicitly read NO BP's and NO IV's in lower extremities(Dr. Oz and Oprah talked about this ha). Last time around, I was horrified when she came back from her MRI with a blood pressure cuff on her leg. She was all bruised and it took almost 2 hours for her to wake up from the anesthesia. Since she doesn't have an inf. vena cava, BP's in her legs really aren't accurate. Hopefully, this time around I will be better prepared. I'm going to have pants AND socks on her too, so the docs don't have any access there. I guess I am excited to hopefully get another good scan and there will be no tumor. It's hard to live in that place of fear so I've kind of convinced myself she is all well although it's still possible for us to get bad news. Though, to look at her she is the picture of health so common sense and intuition, I believe, lead me to think she is doing well. So here's a picture of Twinkle Toes looking all grown up and here is Grace's favorite spot(under my desk making photocopies! she loves the lights on the printer)

Model Train Enthusiasts
Today was another Candlelighters(kids with cancer) event and the kids had a ball! They have the best events. Lana and Celeste came and stayed Friday night so Kaylee got to go with us. The people in this model train club have built life-size model trains that really run and tracks for them to go on. A couple of the engines ran on gasoline and one of them was a steam engine. They are modeled after real-life trains. They also have a huge room of miniature model trains and a conductor who runs about 5 of them at a time. I don't think I've ever seen anything like this. I'm not sure I even knew this existed. Apparently, these clubs exist all over and we heard about one that is in the Guiness Book of World Records. Apparently, you can ride their trains for 3.5 hours and never go over the same tracks. It's pretty impressive.

Eeyore and Company

Twinkle Toe's preschool class went out to a horse/donkey farm called Eeyore and Company last week. They had a blast! Brother got to go too and he loved it. One of her classmates has ponies that they do for rides at birthday parties and so forth, so her family brought their ponies and the kids got pony rides. All in all it was a great day!
